Medical Student Call for Abstracts for the TXACP Annual Meeting

Medical students are invited to submit clinical cases that have clinical relevance to internal medicine. Separate competitions will be conducted for ACP Associate Members and for ACP Medical Student Members. Limit of one entry per first author.

Clinical Vignette:

A clinical vignette is a report of one or more cases that illustrates a new disease entity or a prominent or unusual clinical feature of an established disease. It may include a summary of pertinent patient history, physical findings, laboratory data, or management description.

Submission Deadline:

Submission deadline for medical students is Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Abstracts submitted after midnight on either date will automatically be rejected. All abstracts must be submitted on the online submission form.

Medical Students Win at IM2010

Congratulations to the two medical students that won in the abstract competition at Internal Medicine 2010 meeting. The winners are as follows:

Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
Title: A Benign Cause of Neck Swelling in the HIV Patient

Vanessa Gray
Texas A&M University, College Station, TX
Title: An Aberrant Right Subclavian Artery and Duct of Kommerell Aneurysm Complicated by Dissection

Medical Student's Competitions at the TXACP Annual Meeting

Six student members presented their clinical vignettes in conjunction with the annual meeting on Saturday morning. Outstanding presentations were made by Vanessa Gray, TAMUHSC; Julia Meade, TAMUHSC; Elizabeth Bowhay, UTHSCSA; Eric Miller, TTUHSC-Lubbock; Gloria Li, UTMB, and Douglas Heiner, UTMB.

Vanessa Gray won first place in the competition with her vignette, "Duct, Duct, Loose." Vanessa will automatically advance to Toronto to compete at the national level during the ACP Internal Medicine 2010. Elizabeth Bowhay won second place and Julia Meade placed third.

This year's poster competition filled the ballroom foyer. Ten students representing seven medical schools competed in this competition. Taking first place in the medical student's poster competition was Adriane Haragan, from UTMB in Galveston. Michael McNeal from TAMHSC placed second in the competition.

Special thanks goes to Karen Szauter, MD, FACP, Galveston, who serves as a Co-Chair committee chair and organized all of the student's competitions for the annual meeting.

Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Day Grants: Funding Available for Young Physician, Associate, and Medical Student Members to Attend Leadership Day 2010

The ACP is pleased to announce that up to 28 grants of $750 each will be provided to cover Young Physician, Associate, and Medical Student members’ expenses to attend Leadership Day 2010, being held May 18-19, 2010. These grants are being provided through the Joseph E. Johnson Fund and a grant provided by Pfizer. Eight grants are available for young physician members, 12 grants are available for Associate members, and 8 grants are available for Medical Student members.

To apply for a Leadership Day Grant, members must complete the application and submit it electronically by January 26, 2010. Each $750 grant will be given to the chapter for the Governor to distribute.

Congratulations to Evan Hardegree for his Clinical Vignette Poster at IM 2009

Out of the forty-five medical students that competed at the Internal Medicine 2009 clinical vignette poster competition, Evan Hardagree, Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, was one of the top five winners. Congrats to Evan and congratulatons to all of the other students that participated in the medical student competitions at IM 2009.

Evan Hardegree, MSIII at Texas A&M Health Science Center, was the first place winner in the TX Chapter Medical Students Clinical Vignette Competition in November. Evan won an all-expense-paid trip to Internal Medicine 2009 in Philadelphia to compete in the national ACP poster contest. He was one of five student winners out of 45 competitors. Congratulations Evan.

General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program

The General Internal Medicine Statewide Preceptorship Program (GIMSPP) places students with internists across the state for three or four-week preceptorships during the student's summer break. Students from all eight of the Texas medical schools participate -- most are first and second year students, however, third and fourth year students are also eligible.
